St. Johnsbury, a hill town in Caledonia County in northeastern Vermont, is the subject of this bird's-eye view, which shows the town as if seen from above its streets. George E. Norris drew many panoramic town views in the 1870s and 1880s, and the lithographers Beck & Pauli printed this one in 1884. The town's growth rested largely on the Fairbanks scale works, and the Fairbanks family left a lasting mark on St. Johnsbury's civic life, including the Athenaeum on Main Street. Views like this record buildings and street patterns of the period, which makes them useful to anyone studying Vermont towns in the 1880s.
