Demosthenes, the Athenian orator and statesman, spent much of the 4th century BC warning his fellow citizens about the rising power of Philip II of Macedon. His speeches against Philip, known as the Philippics, were admired in antiquity for their force and precision, and later writers preserved the tradition that he trained his voice by speaking with pebbles in his mouth. The caption card gives no date, so this print's age cannot be fixed from the record. Portraits of Demosthenes generally descend from Roman copies of lost Greek sculptures made long after his death.
