Bernhard von Bülow, chancellor of Germany from 1900 to 1909, appears here in a reproduction of a caricature drawn by Olaf Gulbransson, the Norwegian-born artist who became a leading draftsman for the Munich satirical magazine *Simplicissimus*. Bülow was known for his polished diplomacy and urbane social manner, traits that caricaturists delighted in stretching into vanity and evasion. The record gives no date for the drawing, so its exact moment is uncertain, but the Bülow years were marked by strained relations with Britain and frequent press mockery of German politics. The drawing's value lies in how much it says with a few decisive lines.
