Few portraits from the 1850s display their remedies as openly as this one, which presents a woman whose clothing itself is meant to guard against cholera. The print was issued in Nuremberg by P.C. Geissler and credited to M.G. Saphir, and it dates to about 1850, when Europe had already endured several cholera epidemics since 1830. Popular belief in protective garments, charms, and tonics was widespread then, and the colored engraving may be read both as a record of that medical fashion and as a wry comment on how fear of disease shaped everyday dress.
