Agnes Ernst, later Agnes Ernst Meyer (1887-1970), appears here in a half-length pose turned to the left, a format that was common in studio portraiture of the early 1900s. The record gives only a date range of 1900 to 1920, so the print's exact studio and photographer are not documented. Portraits of this kind were often made for family albums, announcements, or calling cards, and they show how middle-class and well-to-do sitters wanted to be seen during the decades before World War I. Meyer went on to become a writer and a noted patron of the arts in Washington, D.C.
