Clinton Hart Merriam appears here in a half-length portrait turned to the left, a view that gives the sitter a three-quarter profile rather than a straight-on stare. Merriam (1855-1942) was an American zoologist who led the U.S. Biological Survey and helped shape early federal work on wildlife and the mapping of plant and animal life across North America. Dating to 1901, the photograph comes from the Ruthven Deane Collection at the Library of Congress, a group of portraits assembled by a Chicago collector who gathered likenesses of notable people of his era.
