Buttermilk Falls sits in the Delaware Water Gap, where the Delaware River cuts through the Kittatinny Ridge on the Pennsylvania and New Jersey border. The waterfall tumbles down a rocky ravine near the gap, a spot that drew hikers, painters and summer visitors long before the area became a national recreation site. Views like this one were popular with nineteenth-century travelers who came by rail and steamboat to see the scenic gorge. Today the falls remain a favorite stop for walkers exploring the surrounding trails.
