The Water Gap is where the Delaware River cuts through Kittatinny Ridge on the border of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and this hand-colored postcard shows that gorge with a road running along the riverbank. Views like this were popular on postcards in the early twentieth century, when color was often added by hand to black-and-white photographs. Tourism grew in the region as rail lines and automobile roads brought visitors to the mountains and river. The tinting gives the water and wooded slopes a softer, more painterly look than a plain photograph would.
