The Delaware Water Gap is a notch cut through Kittatinny Ridge where the Delaware River has worked its way southeast across the mountains for millions of years, and this wide view takes in both the river and the flanking slopes that make the gap so striking. Rivers that cut gaps like this are often older than the mountains around them, which is why the water appears to pass straight through the ridge rather than around it. Landscape views of the gap became popular in the nineteenth century, when travelers on the river and the railroads sought out scenery that could be reached without great effort. Look closely at the river's path and the shape of the hills to see how the terrain channels the water.
