The Delaware Water Gap is a deep notch cut through Kittatinny Ridge where the Delaware River forces its way between Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and that geology is what sets this view apart from other scenes on the board. The river kept its course as the land rose around it, carving a passage that has drawn travelers, boaters and painters for generations. Turning to the gap as a subject reflects the nineteenth-century fascination with dramatic American scenery, when landscape views of rivers, mountains and waterfalls were widely reproduced and sought after. Look closely at how the ridge walls frame the water and sky, since that composition is the point of the scene.
