The Lackawanna Railroad's line through the Delaware Water Gap is what sets this view apart from other scenes on the board: a rail cut hewn into the steep wooded slopes where the Delaware River breaks through Kittatinny Ridge. The Lackawanna built this route to carry coal and freight across northwestern New Jersey, and the gap was among the most dramatic stretches of track on the line. Engineers had to blast and cut through the rock to make room for the roadbed beside the river. Views like this one show how the railroad and the river shared a narrow corridor, a combination that drew both travelers and photographers to the Water Gap in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
