The Delaware Water Gap is the notch the Delaware River has cut through the Kittatinny Ridge along the New Jersey and Pennsylvania border, and the lake named here, Lake Lenape, sits within that wider landscape. The name honors the Lenape people, whose ancestral homeland included this stretch of the river valley long before European settlement. Visitors have long prized the gap for its steep forested slopes and river views, and the surrounding land was later set aside for public recreation as the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The picture is a useful record of how the valley looked when the lake and its shoreline were part of the scenery that drew people north from Philadelphia and New York.
