The Delaware Water Gap is a deep notch cut through the Kittatinny Ridge where the Delaware River forces its way between Pennsylvania and New Jersey. In this view, the gap appears far off across the river valley, with the wooded ridgeline rising beyond the foreground fields and water. Travelers and artists in the nineteenth century prized the scene for exactly this contrast of open river and steep mountain, and the gap became a favorite subject for painters of the Hudson River era and the tourists who followed them.
