The Delaware Water Gap is a notch cut through the Kittatinny Ridge where the Delaware River forces its way between Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and this view from the Shawnee side looks south down that channel toward the water. Shawnee, on the Pennsylvania bank, grew into a resort village in the nineteenth century as travelers arrived by rail and steamboat to take in the scenery. Views like this one helped make the gap a destination for artists and tourists, and the sweep of river between the steep wooded slopes is what drew them.
