The Delaware Water Gap is a notch cut through Kittatinny Ridge where the Delaware River runs between steep wooded slopes, forming the boundary between New Jersey and Pennsylvania. This view, taken from the New Jersey side around 1900, comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document scenery and towns for postcards and illustrated guides. The gap was a favorite stop for tourists arriving by rail and steamboat, and the photograph shows how the river has carved its path through the mountain over a very long span of time.
