This watercolor, titled *Delaware Water Gap*, was painted "from nature" by J. Queen in 1856, and the title and date are inscribed on the back. The Gap is a deep notch where the Delaware River cuts through the Kittatinny Ridge along the New Jersey and Pennsylvania border. In the 1850s, artists drawn to the Romantic landscape tradition often chose such dramatic river scenery, and the Gap became a favorite subject for travelers and sketchers. Queen's work reflects that interest in recording a specific natural site directly from observation.
