The Delaware Water Gap is the notch where the Delaware River cuts through the Kittatinny Ridge on the border of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and this chromolithograph shows that dramatic break in the mountains. It was printed in Philadelphia around 1856 by the firm Ibbotson & Queen, with the view drawn from nature by James Queen. Color prints like this were popular in the 1850s, when American publishers sold scenic views of natural wonders to households and travelers who could not visit them in person. Chromolithographs were made by printing successive stone layers of color, so the tones here reflect the labor and skill of a mid-century commercial workshop.
