The Delaware Water Gap is a narrow notch where the Delaware River cuts through the Kittatinny Ridge along the New Jersey and Pennsylvania border, and this view looks at it from the southern side, where the river bends through the mountains. Landscapes of the gap became popular subjects for American artists and photographers in the nineteenth century, when travelers came by rail to see its steep wooded slopes and river scenery. Pictures taken from this vantage often emphasize the sheer height of the ridges closing in on the water, which is the feature that made the place so admired. The gap was later protected as part of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, so images like this one also record a landscape that visitors still come to see.
