Bartholomeus de Portugees, or Bartholomew the Portuguese, was a buccaneer whose exploits are recorded in Alexandre Exquemelin's account of the pirates and privateers who raided Spanish settlements in the Caribbean in the later 1600s. Exquemelin, a former buccaneer himself, first published his book in Dutch, and its vivid accounts of raids, torture and rough living made it one of the most widely read sources on the period. This engraving, dated 1678 in its record, shows the kind of figure that made the book popular, with the sea-raider as both a feared adventurer and a figure of fascination for European readers.
