Named for the meadowlark, a grassland songbird familiar across North America, this platinum print is signed only with its maker's monogram, MW, and its title suggests a lyrical scene rather than a straightforward record. Around 1900, many photographers working in the pictorialist style favored platinum printing for its soft, velvety surface and subtle range of grays. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a prominent American photographer, assembled artistic prints like this one for her own collection, which she gave to the Library of Congress in 1948. The print was later included in the 2001 exhibition *Ambassadors of Progress*.
