This engraving gives a close view of the sleeping quarters between decks on an emigrant ship, with tiers of narrow berths packed under low beams. Scenes like this were common in the 1840s and 1850s, when large numbers of people left Britain and Ireland for North America and Australia, many of them in steerage on sailing vessels. Britain's Passenger Act of 1842 set minimum space and provisioning rules, partly in response to reports of overcrowding and disease at sea. The record's date is uncertain, so the print is best read as a picture of the period.
