The picture shows the Institute of Radium in Hanoi, a facility whose name points to radium therapy, a method of treating cancer with radioactive material. Radium became a medical tool soon after Marie and Pierre Curie isolated it in the late 1890s, and institutes like this one spread through Europe and its colonies over the following decades. The photograph is dated only approximately to around 1950, a period when Vietnam was embroiled in the First Indochina War, so it captures a medical site working under difficult conditions. The record offers few details about the building or its staff, so the image is best read as a glimpse of early radiation medicine in Southeast Asia.
