Dark-faced Shropshire sheep, with their brown or black faces and legs, are the subject here, and the breed takes its name from the English county of Shropshire, where it was developed in the 1800s. The Detroit Publishing Company, active from the 1890s into the 1920s, documented American scenes and sold its views as postcards and lantern slides. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative, dated between 1900 and 1905, came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado. Shropshires were prized in the United States for their meat and sturdy wool, so a picture like this records the livestock side of farming in that period.
