Veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic, the Union veterans' organization formed after the Civil War, march through Washington in this 1915 view. By the 1910s the surviving members were growing old, and their parades drew crowds that turned the capital's streets into a public stage for remembrance of the war. The photograph comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented street life and public events in the early twentieth century. The 4-by-6-inch glass negative shows streaks and blemishes from age, a reminder of how fragile these plates can be.
