Veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic, the Union Civil War veterans' organization founded in 1866, are the focus of this 1915 view of a parade in Washington, D.C. By then the marchers were men in their sixties and seventies, half a century removed from the war, and the city's processions often brought them together for reunions and patriotic occasions. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington street life and public events in the early twentieth century, made the picture on a glass negative. The title comes from unverified data, so the exact route and occasion are not confirmed, and the plate shows streaks from the age of its coating.
