This panorama, the third in a series, shows the Boston Ball Grounds in the South End, the field where the city's professional club played in the early 1870s. Panoramic views like this were popular in the period because a single wide print could show the whole park at once: the diamond, the outfield, the grandstand, and the spectators who turned out for games. Baseball was then a young professional sport, and clubs like Boston's were still working out how to draw paying crowds. Look at the crowd and the surrounding buildings to get a sense of how the ballpark fit into the neighborhood.
