Two of the most powerful men in the Nazi government face each other in this three-quarter-length view, clasping hands in a moment the record dates to January 12, 1938. Hermann Göring, then Reich Air Minister, and Joseph Goebbels, the Reich Minister of Propaganda, were both close to Adolf Hitler, and the cataloging links the photograph to an SA unit named for the Feldherrnhalle in Munich, a site tied to the failed 1923 putsch. Images like this were often staged to show unity among the regime's leaders, so the posture and setting deserve as much attention as the faces.
