Few American stage shows of the 1860s and 1870s were as widely talked about as *The Black Crook*, whose name became shorthand for the lavish spectacle. The melodrama, loosely drawn from the Faust legend, opened at Niblo's Garden in New York in 1866 and was remembered for its large corps of dancers, elaborate scenery and costumes that drew both crowds and critics. This 1879 black-and-white lithograph was made by H.A. Thomas, whose New York studio on Broadway produced many theatrical bills, and it was copyrighted that year. It shows how commercial lithography promoted such spectacles to the public.
