Its caption, "Sheriff you let my trunk alone!", gives the only glimpse of the comedy's plot, a moment of farcical panic that the poster turns into its selling point. The title names Charles Hale Hoyt, a playwright known for popular, fast-paced farces in the 1880s and 1890s, and the production was presented under the Hoyt & McKee management. The lithograph was printed by the Strobridge Lithographing Company, a Cincinnati and New York firm that produced much of the bright, large-format theatrical advertising of the period.
