Crowds gathered on the White House grounds for Marine Band concerts, and this glass negative appears to capture one such outdoor performance by the United States Marine Band, which has provided music for presidential occasions since Thomas Jefferson's time. The title and July 16, 1921 date were written by the National Photo Company on the negative or its sleeve and have not been independently verified. The studio worked in Washington from about 1906 to 1932, recording the capital's public life on large glass plates. Streaks and blemishes on the plate come from natural deterioration of its original coating.
