The United States Marine Band, the oldest continuously active professional musical organization in the country, has provided music at the White House since the administration of Thomas Jefferson, and this 1928 view captures that long tradition on the executive mansion's grounds. The Marine Band, founded in 1798, earned the nickname "The President's Own" and performs at official receptions, state dinners and public ceremonies. By the late 1920s, the band had become a fixture of Washington social life, and its uniformed players were a familiar sight at both formal events and open-air concerts. Notice the formal dress and the setting, which show how closely the military ensemble was tied to the presidency during the Coolidge years.
