Known around the world by its nickname, the White House takes its name from the coat of whitewash applied after British forces set fire to the building in 1814 during the War of 1812. Irish-born architect James Hoban won the design competition for the residence in the 1790s, and John Adams became the first president to live there in 1800. The sandstone mansion has been rebuilt, expanded and remodeled many times since, and it remains the official home of the president and the center of the executive branch.
