Here the First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy, takes her young son, John F. Kennedy, Jr., out for air on the White House grounds in March 1961, only a few months after the family moved into the residence. The picture is one of many that the press and photographers produced to show the Kennedys as a young family, a deliberate contrast to the formal ceremony of the executive mansion. The baby carriage and the open lawn give a domestic, informal scene in a place usually associated with official business. The photograph, credited to Capa, is a useful record of how the public was shown the first family's private life in the early 1960s.
