A rare feature of this view is the photographer's coating and developing box, which sits at the left edge of the frame. Most architectural pictures of the period leave the working tools out, so its presence shows the camera crew at work on the grounds. The picture dates to the years between 1862 and 1868, when the Civil War was being fought and Washington was crowded with soldiers, officials, and visitors. Cartes de visite like this one were small, inexpensive mounted prints, sold and collected in large numbers, which helped spread images of the President's house far beyond the capital.
