This photograph shows a group of White House photographers taking a meal on the grounds, an unusually informal scene from a building better known for formal portraits. The image comes from the National Photo Company Collection, the work of a Washington studio that documented government officials, public events, and daily life in the capital in the early twentieth century. Pictures of the press at work near the presidency are less common than the official portraits they helped produce, so this one offers a glimpse of the people behind the camera. The record dates it to between 1909 and 1932.
