Few buildings in America are as instantly recognizable as the White House, the executive residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. Irish-born architect James Hoban won the design competition for it in 1792, and John Adams became the first president to live there in 1800. British troops set the building afire during the War of 1812, and the white paint applied during its repair is often linked to the nickname that later became its official name. Worth noticing is how much the building has been remodeled and expanded since, while its basic sandstone form has stayed largely the same.
