A group of miners posed for this glass negative on the grounds of the White House on October 8, 1921, a date the National Photo Company recorded on the negative sleeve. The company's large collection of Washington-area photographs was built by working commercial studios, which sold prints of visiting delegations, officials and passing crowds to the public. The title comes from unverified data supplied by the company, so the identity of the men and the occasion behind their visit are not confirmed here. The glass plate also shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating, which give it a soft, mottled look.
