A glass negative from October 7, 1921, records a group of South Dakota visitors posed at the White House, a reminder that delegations from the states often traveled to Washington to meet the president and tour the executive mansion. The picture belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, a large body of work made by a commercial studio that photographed Washington landmarks, officials and visitors in the early twentieth century. Its title comes from information the studio wrote on the negative or its sleeve, which the Library of Congress notes has not been independently verified. Viewers may also notice streaks and blemishes on the glass, the result of natural deterioration in the original coatings.
