Edward Sachse's 1852 color lithograph shows Washington from an elevated, panoramic angle, with the Capitol as its focal point. The print was issued by E. Sachse & Co. of Baltimore, a firm known for city views and bird's-eye perspectives that let viewers take in an entire town at once. In 1852 the Capitol was in the middle of a major expansion, with new wings being added to the building, so the view captures a national symbol still taking shape. Sachse's decorative style and careful detail make the print useful both as a record of the early city and as a piece of mid-century American printmaking.
