Titled simply *View of Washington*, this picture presents the city as a whole rather than a single building, which sets it apart from the Capitol views on this board. L'Enfant's 1791 plan laid out the capital with the Capitol on Jenkins Hill as its anchor, but for much of the 19th century the city remained a spread-out town of broad avenues and open ground. Printmakers produced many such panoramas to show the seat of government as a place still under construction, and they are useful for seeing how the Capitol related to the streets and landscape around it.
