The only title on record for this negative is the single word "Wayward," and its catalog entry says the Detroit Publishing Company attribution rests on the style of the title and numbering, since no company number appears on the plate. The 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate is dated June 11, 1896, when the firm was still known as the Detroit Photographic Company and was producing large numbers of American views. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado. Because the record does not describe the scene, the image itself is the best guide to its subject.
