Crowds fill the grounds for the Dempsey-Carpentier heavyweight bout, held in July 1921 at Boyle's Thirty Acres in Jersey City, New Jersey. The match between champion Jack Dempsey and French challenger Georges Carpentier was one of the first sporting events to take in more than a million dollars at the gate, and it drew spectators from well beyond the local area. Carpentier, a decorated veteran of the First World War and a former light heavyweight champion, was widely admired in America, which helped make the fight a national event. The National Photo Company, which made this glass negative, specialized in news and event photography, and its plates preserve the scale of occasions like this one.
