Little is recorded about Lamar Jeffers of Alabama beyond the name and date on this glass negative, which the National Photo Company logged as June 27, 1921. The firm worked in Washington, D.C., during the early twentieth century, photographing officials, visitors and ordinary citizens, and many of its negatives later came to the Library of Congress as gifts. Glass plates were fragile and sensitive to handling and humidity, so the streaks and blemishes in the coating are a sign of natural deterioration over the century since the image was made.
