The name Jean Summers appears on this glass negative as a title taken from the National Photo Company's own notes, though the record does not confirm who the sitter was. The plate dates to about 1921, when the Washington, D.C., firm was producing large numbers of portraits and views on glass, the standard medium before flexible film became common. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of the original coating, a common sign of age in plates of this period.
