Few subjects in the National Photo Company's Mexican views are as specific as this one: a cockfight, a blood sport and social gathering that drew crowds in Mexico's towns and cities. The record dates the glass negative only to the years between 1909 and 1920, a span when the company, a Washington, D.C., firm, sent photographers and sold views of foreign and domestic scenes to a public eager to see distant places. Cockfighting had long been a popular pastime across Mexico, and travel photographers often treated it as a picturesque local custom. The negative's surface shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of its original coating, which is typical of glass plates from this era.
