A glass negative of a bauxite mine in Missouri, the ore that is refined into alumina and then smelted into aluminum. Missouri's bauxite was a minor source compared with the deposits in Arkansas, which supplied most of the country's ore in the early 1900s, so a view of a Missouri working is a useful record of the smaller regional operations. The National Photo Company made thousands of commercial views around 1909 to 1920, when it photographed American industry, travel, and towns for publication. The glass plate shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating, which is typical of negatives from this period.
