A glass negative documenting K.P. Royce of the Graybear Electric Company at work on a "survey of noises," dated February 18, 1926, according to the title, which the National Photo Company recorded on the negative sleeve and which has not been independently verified. The 1920s saw growing concern about urban noise, and engineers and city officials increasingly tried to measure it, so the scene reflects a period when sound was becoming a technical problem. The plate came to the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French, and its streaks and blemishes reflect the natural deterioration of its original coating.
