Georgetown University, founded in 1789 and long regarded as the oldest Catholic institution of higher learning in the United States, is the subject of this glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that recorded the capital and its surroundings in the early twentieth century. The record dates the image to 1925 or 1926, based on other negatives in the same range. Glass plates like this one were coated with light-sensitive emulsion, and the streaks and blemishes visible here come from the gradual breakdown of that coating over time, which is worth keeping in mind when judging its detail.
