The observation tower on the Carnegie, a research vessel built without iron or steel so its magnetic instruments would not be disturbed, sets this view apart. The Carnegie Institution of Washington used the ship to map Earth's magnetic field on voyages across the oceans, and its work ended when it exploded at Apia, Samoa, in 1929. This glass negative, dated October 1919, shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration in its original coatings, which affect fine detail.
