Three of the four glass negatives that make up this panorama of Binghamton, New York, survive, and the right-center section is missing from the collection. The Detroit Publishing Company made these large 18 by 22 inch plates around 1900 to capture wide city views in a single sweep, and the company's numbering shows the scene was issued as one panorama. Binghamton, on the Susquehanna River in the Southern Tier, was then an industrial city, so the wide format suits a town whose streets, rooftops, and factories stretch across the valley floor. The title was assigned by cataloguers rather than taken from the original.
